Large herds roam the plains, following the rains to receive the highest benefit from grazing. Savannas consist of a variety of herbaceous and woody plants, leading to a diversity of animals surviving here. Birds, insects, reptiles and mammals are dependent on the vegetation in the savanna, but no more indirectly so, than the predators. An abundance of nutrient rich plants leads to an abundance of prey for the hunters. There exists both a top down and a bottom up control in savannas. The cycle of energy only restarts when a predator dies.

Small to medium sized perennial tree with hook-like thorns. It carries it seeds in light brown pods, and the flowers are carried on elongated structures. The leaves are feather-like. These trees occur in bushveld and grasslands. Traditionally the bark and leaves can be used for problems with the gastro-intestinal tract. The wood of the tree can also be used as building materials or fire wood.

Medium to large tree with a twisted, bent branches and a flat top. Thorns occur in pairs, fused at the base. Leaves are compound and feather-like. Yellow flowers are carried in spherical florescence. Pods are massive, woody and have a velvety texture. These pods are favoured by cattle and wild animals. The glue contained in the bark is edible and the strong wood can be used for mine tunnel supports as well as handles for machinery.

It can survive in dry areas, but doesn’t tolerate shade. It is commonly used for rotational grazing, erosion and weed control.

The grains can be eaten by people, however it is mostly used for animal bedding, and it provides fibres for paper making, basked weaving and thatching.

They have a reddish brown head and thorax, with a black underbelly. The collect grass seeds in large quantities, but also preys on other insects. They don’t follow smell trails like other ants. They have a painful venomous sting, and are able to bite. Nests occur in open areas lacking any vegetation, and are simply a hole in the ground.

Their most noticeable characteristic is their big hind legs that they use to propel themselves when jumping. They have wings that are about the same length as their body, compound eyes and short feelers. Although the wings are sometimes colourful, their bodies are mostly pale colours. Feed on live plant material. Females lay their eggs under ground, and the eggs hatch after a month. Males rub hind legs together to produce shrill buzzing sound.

Savannah Food Web

They form colonies which consist of a queen, soldiers and workers. They have a reddish brown head, with a pale, soft body. They build round mounds in which the colony lives. They queen can lay up to 20000 eggs per day, and most of these eggs develop to form workers.

Can grow op to a length of 60cm. The body is flattened and covered with square scales. The juveniles have yellow spots on back and stripes on sides, but these markings fade to small lines on the adults. Feeds on insects, flowers, soft fruits and certain leaves.

The body and head is covered by round, bead-like scales. Tan coloured, with black stains. It can grow up to 130cm, and is thus one of the larger lizards in the biome. The tail and body are the same length. Feeds on insects and millipedes. It isn’t venomous, but has a ferocious bite and uses tail as a whip.

Grassland Food Web

It has a thick body and a flat head. Can grow up to 150cm long. The scales on the body are cone shaped. The scales covering the spine are large and white. Apart from the white stripe on the spine, the snake is grey-brown with a cream underside. It is shy and never bites to ward of danger. It successfully preys on other snakes and small vertebrates.

It has cream-coloured feathers and when in flight a white cross is visible. The feathers on the back are completely white. It is an endemic species that breeds in the trees in the savannah and move around in flocks. It is a scavenger and feeds on carcasses of mammals.

Their feathers are pale yellow-brown to dark brown. The main characteristic of this species is that the mouth corners of this bird are orange and stretch till beneath the eyes. No white can be seen when in flight. They have black flight feathers and tail feathers. They feed on a variety of animals, by actively hunting from a perch or scavenging.

The Food Chain Game

This species has a characteristic red head and neck, while the rest of the body is covered in black feathers. The legs and feet are covered by white feathers. It scavenges animal carcasses. It mostly occurs alone and nests in tops of trees.

The neck, back and rump is reddish-brown, the flanks are light brown and the underbelly is off-white. At the top of the head is a black marking, and there are also black lines on the rump. Scent glands are located on the hind legs. Females lack the lyrate shaped horns. They form large breeding herds. They feed on leaves, favouring the acacias.

This hare is one of South Africa’s more common small mammals. It is pale coloured with black and grey spots, with a white underside and a white tail. There is also a white spot on the forehead. They are nocturnal and lay under shrubs in daytime. They are grazers and feed on the stems of grass.

Is there anything better than seeing Halloween stores like Spirit Halloween pop up?! They are one of the harbingers of Halloween and I always look forward to their banners adorning otherwise vacant buildings. Last week I headed out to the closest Spirit Halloween store that was open and basically had the whole store to myself! They were still setting up most of their displays and didn't have everything out yet, but I was still so excited for the chance to get in and check out all their Halloween props, decor and costumes!

I like visiting Spirit for their props, prop displays, decor, accessories, lighting, and massive selection of costumes. This year, I am really excited about their officially licensedHocus Pocus products, including blankets, pillows, kitchen items, and costumes.

While Spirit has many, many costumes, I didn't really focus on these during my visit as you can view them on their website. However, I loved all the props and other items they had. They had some neat stuff this year, and while we wait for more stuff to be stocked and more Spirit stores to open, check out some of the products they did have out during my visit below!

The Victory I-class Star Destroyer was a model of the Victory-class Star Destroyer line that was used by the Galactic Republic. Plagued by design issues that caused constant maintenance, it had a negative reputation within the navy. Following the Proclamation of the New Order, the Victory I ships were inherited by the Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire and underwent a service life extension program, known as the Victory II program. The program brought the Victory II-class Star Destroyer into service, though it did not amend all of the issues with the vessel.

A model of Star Destroyer, the Victory I-class Star Destroyer measured at 900 meters. The Victory I featured a class 1 hyperdrive, and was armed with twelve quadruple turbolaser batteries, forty dual turbolasers, ten tractor beam projectors, and concussion missile launchers.

The Victory II-class Star Destroyer was a class of Star Destroyer that was manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards as a successor to the original Victory I-class Star Destroyer. Initially a life extension program, it became the Victory II program which introduced the Victory II-class, and sought to fix many problems from the previous model including increasing combat performance and longevity. Despite the rebuilds, the Victory II was not able to correct all of the issues of its predecessor.

The Victory II-class cost 50, 000, 000 credits and was equipped with a class 1 and class 15 hyperdrive, a navigation computer, and a long-range sensor. 6, 107 officers, pilots, and enlisted crew operated a vessel, while 1, 600 soldiers were stationed onboard. It could hold consumable for one year, and had a complement of twenty-four starfighters along with shuttles, landing craft, and AT-series walkers.

Victory IIs were armed with the same weapons loadout as the predecessor, and as such were equipped with ten quad light turbolaser batteries that were evenly distributed to the port and starboard sides of the vessel. Many Victory IIs were relegated to serve as defense for a planetary garrison and light patrol duties on the edges of the Galactic Empire's authority. A Victory II was also present in orbit above an ecumenopolis during the Imperial reign.

When you review these one pattern that you can clearly see is that they mostly focus on tasks, listing general answers like use technology, play games, etc.

But they also miss an important engagement strategy - helping students understand “What’s In It For Me (WIIFM)”. The missed opportunity occurs at the start of the lesson and the process used to share your Essential Question.

One of the first key hurdles to learning is to set the stage for why what students are about to learn is important. As teachers, many of us have said to our students that the reason you need to learn this is… because it is in the standard, you will use it next year, or you will be tested on it at the end of the year. While all of these statements are technically true, in most cases all of these statements decrease students’ internal motivation and push their disengagement. The standards and assessment are important to narrow down what is taught, but how we help students find their purpose is on us. Two studies and findings support this:

The importance of the ”Why” was demonstrated in a study (Patall, Cooper, & Robinson, 2008) of several hundred elementary and middle school students. The researchers concluded that choice alone did less to support engagement than showing students how what they’re learning is important to them and connects to real life .

If the Essential Question is, “How do I retell stories connecting the details with signal words?” then I can elaborate on the words connecting and signal words. I can underline the word, connect, and draw three dots connected by a line. I can then circle, sequence signal words, and branch out from it the words beginning, middle, end. This will help me explain the relationship between connecting and sequence. I will be able to refer back to this question every time students connect details using sequence words throughout the lesson, reminding them that retelling stories require connecting the details.
